Q: Christians say they worship a single God, but then talk about the trinity. Isn’t the trinity polytheistic and not monotheistic?

A: No. The trinity is not believing in three separate gods, but one God expressing Himself through three distinct persons. The trinity includes God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 25:19

Basically, the concept of the trinity is as follows:

Father = God, Son = God, Holy Spirit = God

Father =/= Son =/= Holy Spirit

(=/= means “does not equal”)

Q: Deuteronomy 6:4 says “the Lord is one,” so how can all 3 of them be God?

A: God is spirit, therefore, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit would all be of the same substance (spirit). You can’t have a plurality of a single substance. For example, a river, a lake, and rain drop are all distinct, but all of them are composed of a single substance, water, which is H2O.

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

John 4:24

Q: The word “trinity” doesn’t appear in the Bible. What do you have to say about that?

A: It is true that the word “trinity" does not appear in the Bible, but the concept is there. Here’s an example of what I mean.

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

Leviticus 20:13

This passage doesn’t use the word “homosexuality,” but the concept is there, and it’s clear that this passage is referring to homosexuality. Likewise, the word “trinity” isn’t in the Bible, but the concept is there.

Q: Ok, I can understand about the Father and the Son, but how is the Holy Spirit a person?

A: The Holy Spirit is always referred to as “He” or “Him” and never “it.”

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 14:26

Q: Do you have any more passages that support the concept of the trinity?

A: Yes, there are loads of passages all over the Bible where you have a combination of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being present and distinct.

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Luke 3:21-22

If you deny the trinity, you have many passages like this one which would just make no sense.

Q: The passages you’ve been giving in support of the trinity have all been from the New Testament. Do you have anything from the Old Testament?

A: Sure do. Here are two of many; the first one is right in Genesis 1.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26

Why would God be using the words “us” and “our,” which are plural terms, if there was no trinity?

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

Isaiah 6:8

Once again, God is referring to himself in the plural with the word “us.”
