And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

Mark 14:30

Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Luke 22:34

The Claim: Marks says that the rooster would crow twice, but Luke says the rooster would only crow once.

The Explanation: Luke did not claim that the rooster would only crow once. This is just another case where a lack of details does not create an actual contradiction. This can be demonstrated with the following hypothetical.

Bill says, “Ned punched Eric.”

Tim says, “Ned punched Eric twice.”

Is there a contradiction here? No. Both Bill’s and Tim’s statements co-exist as being true. The difference is that Tim’s statement adds the extra detail of “twice.” Likewise, Mark adds the extra detail that the rooster would crow twice. There is no contradiction here.

Extra: Mark is the only one of the four Gospels to have the detail of the rooster crowing twice. Mark and Peter are said to have been close friends, and much of Mark’s Gospel came from Peter. Therefore, it would be logical to expect that events regarding Peter (like Peter’s denial and the rooster crowing) would have more details in the Gospel of Mark.
