But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.

While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

Luke 24:1, 51

until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Acts 1:2-3

The Claim: Luke says that Jesus was risen and within a day he ascended to heaven. Acts says Jesus didn't ascend to heaven until 40 days after the resurrection.

The Explanation: It is true that Acts says Jesus ascended to heaven 40 days after the resurrection. However, Luke chapter 24 does not make any claims as to the length of time between the resurrection of Jesus and his ascension to heaven. It is logical to conclude that there is time passing between Luke 24:1 and Luke 24:51. However, by reading the whole chapter of Luke 24, there's no specific statement as to the number of days between verse 1 and verse 51. Therefore, it is not logical to conclude that Luke 24:1 through 24:51 is talking about one day. It is however, logical to conclude that 40 days could have passed between Luke 24:1 and Luke 24:51. Therefore, this is not a contradiction.
