Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to those in love. He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart.

1 Kings 11:1-3

But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

1 Corinthians 7:2

The Claim: Corinthians says we should only have 1 husband or 1 wife, but 1 Kings says it was ok for Solomon to have 700 wives.

The Explanation: 1 Kings 11:1-3 never said it was ok to have multiple wives. It is not a commandment nor is it permission to have multiple wives. The passage is simply acknowledging that Solomon had 700 wives. Similar to Jephthah, this is just another case of someone in the Bible committing a wrong. Everyone in the Bible, aside from Jesus, is shown to have done something wrong or sinned in some way. Solomon and Jephthah are not the perfect examples we should look toward, Jesus is the perfect example.

1 Kings 11:1-3 is not condoning polygamy. This is not a contradiction.
